Essential Welding Accessories Every Welder Should Have

Whether you’re a professional fabricator or hobbyist, having the right welding accessories can make all the difference in your work quality and efficiency. In this guide, we’ll cover the most popular tools welders rely on as well as personal recommendations from 15 years experience in the field!

1. Welding Angle Magnets

Pictured above is the full size EZ Clean Welding Angle Magnet

What They Do:
Welding angle magnets are designed to hold steel pieces at fixed angles—commonly 45°, 90°, and 135°—so you can tack and weld with accuracy and stability.

Why They’re Essential:

  • Maintain perfect alignment in fabrication projects

  • Free up your hands for safer, cleaner welds

  • Reduce setup time compared to clamps

Key Features to Look For on Welding Angle Magnets:

  • Annodized or Powdercoated construction. You don't want to accidentally have welding slag weld your magnet to your work.

  • Pull Strength. Look for magnets that have a pull strnegth that matches what youre welding. More is not always better because too strong a magnet can break or bend your tack welds when you try and remove it prior to final welding. Look for magnets that are tuned for your work.

  • Ease of cleaning. Typical ferro welding magnets have an exposed magnet that ends up filling with slag and debris as you use them. This in turn ends up causing inaccurate angles. Look for a magnet that has an internal magnet that can be easily cleaned with compressed air or a rag.

Angle magnets come in all shapes and sizes. The size changes what the magnet is best suited for. For instance our EZ Clean Mini Mag is the smallest angle magnet on the market and is perfect for small assemblies and tight areas with limited room.

2. Magnetic Welding Grounds

What They Do:
Magnetic welding grounds make it fast and easy to establish a solid electrical connection for your weld without cumbersome clamps or awkward setups.

Benefits:

  • Quick placement and repositioning

  • Minimal work surface damage

  • Works well in tight or hard-to-reach spaces

Features on Magnetic Welding Grounds to Look For:

  • Replacement parts. Magnetic welding grounds are consumables just like ordinary welding grounds. Look for manufacturers that offer replacement parts.

  • Multipurpose functions. You can find basic magnetic welding grounds that simply act as a ground but the best magnetic welding grounds on the market have additional features such as Burn Bars which allow you to quickly burn off excessive wire on MIG welders.

  • Make sure you buy a magnetic welding ground that has an amp rating that exceeds your welding machines capacity. If you have more amps than the magnet can handle, youll end up overheating the magnet and causing it to lose its magnetism.

Shop WCR Tools:
Magnetic Weld Ground w/ Burn Bar – Features a magnetic base for instant placement and a Copper Burn Bar™ for snapping excess wire without removing your hood.

3. Regulator Wrenches

What They Do:
A regulator wrench allows you to safely and securely open/close gas cylinder valves and adjust regulators without damaging fittings.

Key Features in a Regulator Wrench to Look For:

  • Softer materials like aluminum. You do not want a steel regulator wrench as the difference in hardness between a brass regulator and a steel regulator wrench will cause rounding and damage.

  • multi use. Look for a wrench that has multiple uses besides just being a wrench, Common multi use regulator wrenches have various size slots for various regulator fitting sizes. These work ok but generally the wrenches dont fit in the space youre using. Better Regulator wrenches have features such as a cold chisel for slag removal.

Shop WCR Tools:
Arclight Spanner Regulator Wrench – CNC machined 6061 aluminum, anodized for durability, with recessed chrome-vanadium cold-chisel inserts for long-lasting slag removal. Fits 1 1/8″ regulators and compatible 1″ styles.

4. Welding Carts

Overview:
A welding cart keeps your welder, gas cylinder, and tools organized and mobile. While WCR Tools doesn’t currently stock carts, we recommend choosing one with a sturdy frame, smooth wheels, organized storage, and secure cylinder mounting.

Key Features to look for when buying a Welding Cart:

  • Durable construction. Welding an be an abusive trade and things get banged around quite a lot. You'll want a cart that can handle the abuse.

  • Two bottle slots if you have a multiproccess welder(TIG and MIG for instance) Since MIG machine uses a dedicated bottle with c02 and argon and TIG machines use an Argon only welding cylinder you'll want your cart to be able to hold both bottles. I've made the mistake of not factoring this in and you end up with a random bottle floating around while one is on the cart

  • Compartments that close. Be it drawers or panels you'll want full closure of the accessories inside the welding cart. Welding produces tons of slag and debris which inevitably ends up in your welding cart if you don't have panels that close.

5. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Why It Matters:
Welding PPE protects you from UV rays, sparks, hot metal, fumes, and noise.

Essential PPE Items:

  • Auto-darkening welding helmet. I personally am a fan of the Lincoln Electric Viking series welding helmet. Ive had mine for over a decade and the support for replacement parts has been amazing.

  • Flame-resistant gloves and jacket. Generally speaking youll want heavier gloves when working with stick(SMAW) welding since it has a lot more heat and sparks. I use thinner gloves when TIG welding because I need the extra dexterity to feed filler rod etc.

  • Safety glasses. Always a good idea whenever your cutting or grinding material. You only get one set of peepers!

  • Respirator for fume control. Dont sleep on your lungs. Make sure you get a GOOD respirator if you weld indoors. Trust me, I made this mistake and paid with a nagging cough and tons of phlegm. I now do routine check ups with my doctor because I worry about the long term effects. I recommend the 3M 6000 series. Its a bit bulkier than others but it protected better than competitors like the Miller Electric P100

  • Hearing protection. Ear plugs are fantastic and fit with a welding hood while around ear hearing protection is better when doing general fabrication like grinding and drilling.

Conclusion

The right welding accessories improve your workflow, safety, and final results. At WCR Tools, we offer premium welding magnets, magnetic welding grounds, and regulator wrenches built for professional performance.
